Kilkenny based Irish Artist Paul Christopher Flynn

“What I paint is the land. That my paintings be of this or that particular vista has been decreasing in importance almost since I began working – I intend my paintings to invoke rather than to explain. It has long ceased to be an artist’s task to accurately portray the visible world and while I would not wish to have my paintings considered either cerebral or abstract, neither are they entirely representational.

“It is important to create a visual and emotional space in a painting in which both eye and mind may roam. I believe that my function as an artist is to encourage viewers to participate in the creative process, to explore and complete the paintings for themselves as an aid to meditation.”

Paul was born in Dublin in 1963. After attending the National College of Art, he moved to the United States where he lived until his return to Ireland, and to painting, in 2003. He lives in a restored mill cottage on the banks of the Kings River in Kilkenny with his family, four cats, a dog and a great deal of wildlife, including apparently, Ireland’s second largest otter. He is converting one of the barns on the site into a new studio – visitors are welcome, please call Pauline at (056) 772-8330 for directions.
